Home Education Deserves Better Than a One-Size-Fits-All System

In 2020, around 7,000 New Zealand children were being educated at home. By July 2025, that number had grown to 11,010, spread across 6,518 families. Around 2,000 of them had made that choice in the past year alone.

These families aren't opting out. They're opting in to something they believe in deeply.

There's a kind of courage in that choice. It doesn't always look like courage from the outside. To some, it looks unconventional, even radical. But anyone who has spent time with homeschooling families knows what's really going on: deeply thoughtful parents making a deliberate, loving choice to put their child's wellbeing, pace, and potential at the centre of everything.

We deeply respect that choice. And we want you to know that at Mt Hobson Academy, we always will.

Why Families Are Choosing Home Education

New Zealand's home education community has grown by 57% in just five years, and the families driving that growth aren't doing it on a whim. According to the National Council of Home Educators New Zealand, the ability to tailor learning to their child is the leading motivation. Not a curriculum. Not a standardised test. Their child. Yet for most of those families, the systems available to support them still look a lot like... school.

At Mt Hobson Academy, we think that needs to change. And it's exactly what we've built our school around.

What Homeschooling Families Already Know

Long before the research caught up, homeschooling families knew something important: children learn best when learning feels meaningful.

When a child can follow their curiosity down a rabbit hole and spend a whole morning on ancient civilisations because they can't put it down. That's not a distraction. That's learning in its most alive form. When a family can take three weeks to really understand fractions because one child needs that time, and no bell is going to ring and move them on. That's not falling behind. That's honouring the way that particular child's brain works.

Homeschooling families have always understood that education isn't a race. That a child who feels safe, seen, and engaged will outpace any rigid timetable in the long run. That real-world learning, through travel, through conversation, through doing, is not a substitute for "proper" education. It is proper education.

We believe that too.

The Landscape Is Shifting

Home education in New Zealand is changing. There's a lot of noise right now, a lot of uncertainty, and we know many families are feeling the weight of that.

We're not here to add to that noise, or to tell you how to feel about it. What we will say is this: whatever the road ahead looks like, you don't have to walk it alone. And you shouldn't have to choose between your family's values and meeting the expectations being placed on you.

That's something we can genuinely help with.

Where We Come In, Without Getting in the Way

Mt Hobson Academy was built on a belief that online schooling should work for families, not the other way around. We're a Ministry-registered school, which means we carry the compliance load: the curriculum frameworks, the reporting, the assessment, so that you don't have to.

But here's what matters just as much to us: we do that without taking over.

For families who want to stay in the driver's seat, our parent-led pathway is designed entirely around you. You set the pace. You decide when learning happens. You keep the flexibility that is so central to why you chose home education in the first place. We provide the structure, the resources, and the qualified teacher oversight, and we handle the requirements, but your child's education still looks and feels like yours.

For families who want expert support woven in, our teacher-led classes give students access to live, engaging lessons with qualified teachers who genuinely love what they do. These aren't passive, sit-and-watch experiences. They're interactive, pitched to where your child actually is, and built around topics that connect to the real world. Your child can dip in for one subject, or more, on your terms.

Either way, what you've built with your family doesn't disappear. It gets supported.

We're On Your Side

We know some families will never need a school behind them, and that's completely fine. Homeschooling is a legitimate, valuable, and often remarkable path, and it doesn't require our validation.

But for those of you who are starting to feel stretched: by administration, by shifting expectations, by the very real challenge of doing all of this and running a household and a life, we want you to know there's an option that doesn't ask you to compromise on what matters most.

We're not here to replace what you've built. We're here to make it easier to sustain.

If that sounds like something worth a conversation, we'd love to hear from you.

Mt Hobson Academy is a New Zealand Ministry of Education registered online school offering teacher-led and parent-led learning pathways for students in Years 1-13. We support families to find the balance that works for them.
