Why Learning at Your Own Pace Isn't a Compromise.
In 1984, an educational psychologist named Benjamin Bloom ran a study that's still being cited today, and for good reason.
He split the students into three groups. One learned in a conventional classroom of 30, with periodic tests. Another learned the same content but at their own pace, moving on only once they'd truly mastered a topic, with feedback and correction built in along the way. The third received one-on-one tutoring.
The results weren't subtle. Students in the self-paced, mastery-based group performed a full standard deviation better than their conventionally taught peers. In plain terms, a student who would have scored a B under conventional teaching scored an A under mastery-based learning. Around 70% of the mastery-learning group reached the level of achievement that only the top 20% reached under conventional teaching.
Bloom called it "the 2 sigma problem," because the even bigger gains from one-on-one tutoring were hard to replicate at scale. But the mastery-based finding stuck, because it pointed to something schools don't always act on: most students are capable of far more than a rigid timetable gives them room to show.
What Self-Paced Learning Actually Solves
Anyone who has watched a child sit through a lesson on something they already understand, or get rushed past something they haven't quite grasped yet, knows the problem instinctively. A single pace, set for a room of 25 or 30 children, can only ever be right for a handful of them at any given moment.
Self-paced learning solves this by letting mastery, not the clock, decide when a child moves forward. A child who needs three weeks to feel solid on fractions gets three weeks. A child who's ready to move on after a day isn't held back waiting for the rest of the room. Neither experience is a compromise. Both are the point.
This isn't just intuitive. It's one of the more robust findings in education research, precisely because it isolates what changes when you remove the fixed timetable: engagement goes up, retention improves, and students report a more positive attitude toward learning itself.
How This Shows Up in Our Classrooms
For families on our parent-led pathway, this principle is already built into how you know your child. Parents can tell, better than any test, when their child has truly understood something and when they're just getting through it. We provide the structure and the qualified teacher oversight, the pacing stays where it should: in the hands of the people who know the child best.
What this means in practice is that your child isn't penalised for needing more time with something, and they're not held back when they're ready to move. The checks for understanding are built in, the progression is intentional, and the goal is always mastery, not keeping up with a schedule designed for a room of 30.

A Different Way to Think About "Keeping Up"
Traditional schooling asks one question over and over: is this child keeping up with the group? Mastery-based learning asks a better one: has this child actually understood this, and are they ready for what's next?
That second question is harder to answer at scale. It's also the one that the research says matters more.
