Frequently
asked questions

Who attends Mt Hobson Academy?

Mt Hobson Academy is a co-educational online school for Years 1–10, with three pathways: teacher-led (Years 5–8), parent-led (Years 1–10), and EMI, our hybrid programme running Thursdays and Fridays. We welcome students of all ability levels, including neurodiverse learners and those who need more stretch or support.

The key is that we are able to help all students through the combination of:

  • Small school size.
  • Small class size.
  • Split day structure to suit subject timetable.
  • The care and professionalism of each staff member.

How structured is the learning environment?

That depends on your pathway. Teacher-led families follow a structured timetable, roughly 9:00am–1:00pm, with specialist teachers across core subjects. Parent-led families have more flexibility, working through curriculum-aligned projects at their own pace with teacher support. EMI runs on Thursdays and Fridays as a hybrid programme.

External sports are also accommodated.

What is the enrolment procedure?

After an application is received, a time is made to meet the student. Parents are able to make an appointment prior to sending in an application if they prefer. The Principal/Academic Manager meets the student and discusses the style of learning with the parents and student. An offer of place letter is then sent out with a form asking for acceptance.

Do I need a homeschool exemption?

No. Students enrolled at Mt Hobson Academy are fully enrolled at a registered New Zealand school. You do not need to apply for a homeschool exemption; we take care of all the official enrolment requirements.

How do you track my child's progress?

Through our parent-led programme, your child's work is reviewed and validated by a qualified MHA teacher each term. You'll receive a plain-English progress report twice a year, plus regular check-ins with your learning coach throughout the year so you're never left wondering how things are going.

What support do I get as a parent?

Plenty. You'll have access to curriculum-aligned project materials, self-evaluation tools, and a qualified teacher who provides feedback on your child's work. Your learning coach is available for regular check-ins and is always just an email away if something comes up between sessions.

How much time does parent-led learning take each week?

It varies by age and subject, but most families find that a flexible rhythm of around 2–3 hours of structured learning per day works well. The curriculum is designed to be manageable alongside real life, not a second full-time job.

What about socialisation?

This is one of the most common questions we hear and a fair one. Many of our families find their children are actually more socially connected than before, because they have more time and energy for clubs, sports, community groups, and friendships outside a school setting. Our EMI programme also offers in-person learning every Thursday and Friday for families who want a regular face-to-face component.
